  • Description: The Shadow­Line - The­Original­Classic­Edition,­written by­Mr Joseph­Conrad has­been­published in­the English­language. T­he Shadow­Line is a­short story­based at sea­by Joseph­Conrad. This­is one of­Joseph's­later works,­being­published in­1917. The­novel­depicts the­development­of a young­man upon­taking a­captaincy in­the Orient,­with the­shadow line­of the title­representing­the­threshold of­this­development.­In the story­the young­man is never­named but he­is referred­to as­'young' and­the rest of­his crew on­board the­Orient is­known as the­'old'. Mr­Conrad­always has a­common theme­with in his­books, being­the sea. But­this book­also­recognises­the nature­of wisdom,­experience­and maturity­displayed by­the main­character. ­There is­evidence­that the­novel is a­metaphor of­the First­World War,­given the­timing of­the­publication­(1917). ­Also­references­to a long­struggle­that the­newly­appointed­captain goes­through,­also the­importance­of­camaraderie.­This­viewpoint­may also be­reinforced­by the­knowledge­that­Conrad's­son, Boris,­was wounded­in his­second year­in the First­World­War. Joseph­Conrad was a­Polish­British­novelist,­who became a­British­subject in­1886 after­fleeing his­home country­of Ukraine,­Russia. He­was regarded­as one of­the greatest­novelists in­English,­even though­it was his­second­language. He­wrote­stories and­novels,­predominantl­y with a­nautical or­seaboard­setting,­with a­common theme­being the­human spirit­by the­demands of­duty and­honour. He­was a very­impressionab­le man with­many talents­for writing.
